Catch-up bookkeeping
Months or years behind. It happens more than you think, and it's fixable at any distance.
Catch-up is for books that stopped. Maybe bookkeeping fell off during a busy season and never restarted. Maybe there were never books at all, just a bank account and a shoebox of receipts. Either way, the fix is the same: gather the records, rebuild each month, reconcile everything, and land on current, accurate books.
How far behind can you be? Years. Dave has rebuilt books that sat for 18 to 19 months, and further back is workable too. The work takes longer than a standard onboarding week, and you'll know the honest timeline from the proposal before anything starts.
There's usually a deadline behind these projects: a tax filing, a loan application, a partner who wants numbers. Tell Dave the date on the consultation and he'll tell you plainly whether it's reachable.
Like cleanup projects, catch-up work is paired with ongoing monthly service, planned as at least a year together, so the months he rebuilds are the last months that ever need rebuilding.
Catch-up fits when
- You haven't touched the books in months, or ever
- A tax deadline or loan application needs numbers you don't have
- The IRS or your state sent a letter that requires records
- You've been faking it and you're done faking it
What catch-up includes
- A records checklist so gathering statements is painless
- Every missing month entered and categorized
- All accounts reconciled through today
- Clean year-end numbers your CPA can file from
- A clear timeline, set before work begins
- A monthly plan so you never fall behind again
Questions about catch-up bookkeeping
What do you need from me to catch up my books?
Bank and credit card statements for the missing months, access to your invoicing or point-of-sale systems, and answers to questions as Dave rebuilds. He gives you a checklist so nothing gets hunted for twice.
How fast can you catch up several years of books?
It depends on transaction volume and how complete your records are. Multi-year projects take weeks, not days. The proposal sets the timeline plainly, and if you have a hard deadline Dave will tell you up front whether it's realistic.
Can you work with my CPA on late filings?
Yes. Dave gets the books accurate and complete, then your CPA files from them. He'd rather coordinate with your CPA directly so nothing gets lost in translation.
Is it expensive to catch up years of books?
It costs less than most owners fear, and almost always less than the penalties and missed deductions that come from filing off bad numbers. Dave quotes it after seeing what's involved.
